A história da banda carioca Veludo, surgida no inicio dos anos 70, é tão obscura quanto a de qualquer outra banda daquela época - como Módulo 1000, A Bolha, Vímana , Peso e Scaladacida. Era um tempo onde a juventude queria ir além do Tropicalismo, que era mais acessível, e beber das fontes importadas de bandas como Yes, ELP e King Crimson. Enquanto no Brasil, os únicos grupos que tinham um certo reconhecimento, como Mutantes e Terço, só se apresentavam mais pelo interior do estado, haviam também outros que ganhavam muito dinheiro cantando em inglês e se apresentando na TV e nas capitais, como o Pholhas e Menphis, seguindo a linha de Morris Albert (cantor de Fellings).

Em contrapartida, surgiria em 1974, o Veludo, sob a liderança do tecladisda e compositor Elias Mizrahi. Tinha ainda em sua formação o guitar-hero Paulo de Castro e o ex-Bolha, considerado por muitos como o melhor baterista carioca, Gustavo Schoeter (que depois tocaria na Cor do Som) e, no baixo, Pedro Jaguaribe. Antes disso se chamava Veludo Elétrico e chegou a ter entre seus integrantes: Lulu Santos e Fernando Gama (que saíram para formar o lendário Vímana), Rui Motta, Tulio Mourão e Luciano Alvez (que passaram pelos Mutantes, liderado por Serginho Dias). Fernando Gama integraria depois o Boca Livre, Tulio Mourão tocaria com Milton Nascimento entre outros, e Luciano Alvez nos primeiros discos de Pepeu Gomes.
O som do grupo nessa época era basicamente calcado no hard-rock, talvez com toques de Deep Purple, e muito improvisado. Muitas vezes parececiam que tocavam tão alucinados que iriam se perder no meio dos temas. Natural, pois o Veludo Elétrico fez muitos shows pelo Rio de Janeiro tocando Rolling Stones, mas a proposta do agora "Veludo" já se destanciava bastante da original. Contudo, a fama da banda se espalhava com enorme repercurssão. Diversas eram as dificuldades naqueles anos (1974-1975), pois nenhuma gravadora estava disposta a levá-los para o estúdio e investir; o som era muito mais experimental. Aliás, de experimental no Brasil, só o Hermeto Pascoal conseguiu alguma coisa, mesmo assim teve que sair do país.Por causa disso, alguns fãs levavam gravadores para as apresentações afim de obter registros das músicas e assim, no início dos anos 90, surge o disco 'Veludo ao Vivo' (1975), fruto da atitude de um fã que teve a coragem de prensar 2000 cópias e, dessa forma, prestar uma valiosa contribuição para a história do rock nacional. O som foi gravado da apresentação da banda no projeto Banana Progressiva, impulsionado pelo multimídia Nelson Motta. Uma raridade imperdível, apesar da baixa qualidade técnica da gravação - o que é perfeitamente compreensível.
